Patangarh (Dindori) / Bhopal, M.P.
Born in the natural cradle of Patangarh in the tribal-majority Dindori district of Madhya Pradesh, Balmati Tekam is an inspired Gond artist whose canvases radiate the primordial rhythm of forest life, mythological fauna, and the living spirits of the wilderness.
Balmati Tekam, a vibrant young painter from the indigenous Gond community, was born in Patangarh in the forested Dindori district of Madhya Pradesh—the historic epicenter of contemporary Gond art. Raised amidst hill ranges, sacred groves, and folklore, she developed an organic bond with nature from early girlhood. Despite leaving formal school early due to household circumstances, her artistic spirit flourished unabated.
In 2013, she married traditional painter Anil Tekam and relocated to Bhopal. Immersing herself in his studio practice, she mastered the fine brushwork, pointillist dots, and rhythmic hatching that characterize Gond painting. Her background also draws deep cross-cultural resonances from the wood carvings of Bastar and Abujhmad, Warli forms of Maharashtra, and Dokra lost-wax bronze crafts.
Balmati has exhibited in premier cultural centres including Chandigarh, New Delhi, Shimla, Lucknow, Indore, Bhopal, and Khajuraho. In Shalaka-43 at Aadivart Museum, her curated body of work is offered for acquisition to art connoisseurs, with all proceeds directly supporting the artist.
Authentic original paintings on display at Shalaka Gallery. Available for acquisition directly from the artist.
