Architectural Heritage (English)
Many different types of houses are built in the region. A traditional house of Baghelkhand region is called 'Katuyi Bakhari' because of its distinctive construction style. It gets bifurcated in two long rooms with a common corridor for air and light. Doors are also fixed in this corridor for security purpose. There is a porch, built in cutting style, in front of both the rooms. The concept behind making these types of houses in earlier times was to protect crops and cattle of the house, because this region was surrounded by dense forest in those times.
The lower part of these two-storey space is used as a store-room, while the upside rooms are used for sleeping and dressing. Two windows each with artistic grills made of bamboo planks and wood are placed in the front and back of the rooms. The rear windows are also important for monitoring the fields and cattle. A staircase is also setup inside the rooms for going upstairs, and a wooden-plank made sitting room is made next to it. The roof-top of it are kept slightly below, which adds beauty to the house.
The porches on both sides of the door are used for visitor's room, therefore decorated beds and big chairs are setup here. Artistic pillars of this porch make this open space very beautiful and airy. This portion is built slightly higher for security reasons. A separate room with a connecting window is attached to it, which is often used for sleeping at night by guests.
Backside room is used as kitchen and wood-sticks, cow-dung cakes, firewood are kept behind it. Middle portion is used as dining space. Here, in one corner, a Sinka is hanged with ceiling, in which milk or buttermilk is kept. In the backyard of the house, one side is reserved for cattle and on the other side fodder and hay is stored for animals. If some extra space is available at the backside, then some plants and vegetables are grown there, and when the number of family members increases, then couple of rooms are built here.
