Gaatla

Gata or Gaatla is established by the Bheels in the memory of family member. These memorial stones are set up for those who die untimely and unnatural death like accident, murder, suicide or any such unnatural death. Earlier Gaatlas were made in stone and wood, nowadays they are also made in concrete. In gaatlas the dead person is shown in picture form. Gatla is made in black stone for women and in white stone for men. Various figures are also engraved on it. For example sun, moon, a person or a woman riding a horse, then their picture is engraved in front of the horse. The figures of rifle, arrow-bow or sword or even snakes are seen at some places.

The traditional event of Gaatla establishment is an elaborate ritual in which all members of the family and the village are invited. After the completion of the rituals, the Gaatla is installed at the boundary of the village or in the field of the family of the deceased. On major occasions and festivals, a lamp is lit near it. Bheels consider Gaatlas as a place of worship.

गातला

Gaatla - Work in Progress गाता या गातला भीलों द्वारा मृतक की स्मृति में स्थापित किया है। गाता या गातला उन्हीं लोगों का बनाया जाता है, जिनकी मृत्यु आकस्मिक या असामयिक हुई हो। जैसे-दुर्घटना, हत्या, आत्महत्या या फिर कोई ऐसी ही अप्राकृतिक मृत्यु। गातला पहले तो पत्थर, लकड़ी में बनाये जाते थे, आजकल कंकरीट में भी बनाए जाने लगे हैं। इसमें मृत व्यक्ति को चित्र रूप में दिखाया जाता है। स्त्री के लिए काले पत्थर एवं पुरुष के लिए सफेद पत्थर में गातला बनवाया जाता है। इस पर विभिन्न आकृतियाँ भी उकेरी जाती हैं। जैसे सूरज, चाँद, घोड़े पर सवार व्यक्ति या स्त्री है तो घोड़े के सामने उसका चित्र उकेरा जाता है। कहीं-कहीं बंदूक, तीर-कमान या फिर तलवार या साँप की भी आकृतियाँ देखने को मिलती है।

गातला स्थापना का पारम्परिक आयोजन भव्य होता है तथा परिवार एवं गाँव को न्यौता दिया जाता है। अनुष्ठान पूरा होने के पश्चात् गातला को गाँव की सीमा पर या फिर मृतक के परिवार के खेत में स्थापित कर दिया जाता है। प्रमुख अवसरों-त्योहारों पर उसके आगे दीपक जलाया जाता है। भील गातलों को देवस्थान के समान मानते हैं।
