Balmati Tekam, a young painter from the Gond tribal community, was born in Patangarh in the tribal-majority Dindori district of Madhya Pradesh. She spent her childhood close to nature, surrounded by lush forests and hills. Due to family hardships and economic constraints, she was only able to complete schooling up to the sixth standard. However, she possessed a natural inclination toward art from early childhood, and the vibrant art and culture of neighbouring Chhattisgarh left a deep imprint on her life.
In 2013, she married Shri Anil Tekam, a resident of Bhopal and a traditional painter. Under her husband's constant company and guidance, she closely observed, understood, and mastered the nuances of Gond painting, actively assisting him in his artistic endeavours. Even prior to her marriage, she was well-acquainted with the forest folk traditions of Bastar and Abujhmad. Beyond that, her creative journey was shaped by connections to Maharashtra's Warli painting, Dhokra bell metal craft (Ghadwa Shilp), and tribal bamboo decorative items—influences that vividly reflect across her distinctive canvas.
She has participated in solo and group art exhibitions held across several cities in India, including Chandigarh, Delhi, Shimla, Lucknow, Indore, Bhopal, Jabalpur, and Khajuraho. She attributes her artistic journey and success entirely to her husband, Shri Anil Tekam, whose unwavering encouragement continues to refine her artistic voice. The splendour of nature, rural surroundings, and forest life remain central themes in her work.
